Veteran singer Rina Hugo was born on 13 March 1949 in Mthatha, Eastern Cape province of South Africa.
Education
Hugo obtained a Bachelor of Music (B.Mus) degree at North-West University (then still Potchefstroom University for CHO) in 1970. She was a member of the Alabama Student Society.
Career
Hugo sang and excelled in several genres as a solo artist. She sang in Opera, oratorio, operetta, musicals, art songs, and light music.
Some of her songs include Hoor Jy My Stem, Genadelied, More Lyk Dit Anders, and Jerusalem. She released her hit song, Troepie Doepie, in the mid-1980s.
Hugo and Bruce Sanderson were named winners of the ATKV’s Crescendo in 1978.
Aside from singing, Rina Hugo has appeared in movies, including the 1986 film You Must Be Joking!. It casts Mike Schutte, Carike Keuzenkamp, Leon Schuster, Kallie Knoetze, and Janine Pretorius.
On 26 January 2020, Hugo was inaugurated as a living legend in the South African Legends Museum.
Personal Life
Rina Hugo is married to musician Johan van Rensburg. The couple has a daughter, Anri van der Linde, and a son, Riaan.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Rina and her husband contracted the virus, and they have fully recovered.
