Nasiphi Moya (born 6 February 1988) is a South African politician. She is currently the Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane.

Moya worked for the Democratic Alliance’s Head Office, its Gauteng branch, from 2014 to 2019. She was the chief of staff to many DA mayors in Tshwane.

Early Life

Nasiphi Moya was born on 6 February 1988 in Mpikwana, Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa. She grew up in Mpikwana but relocated to Cape Town, Western Cape, at 15.

Education

In 2007, Nasiphi obtained a Bachelor of Social Science in Politics and Public Policy and Administration from the University of Cape Town.

She also holds an Honours Degree in Social Science, specializing in Public Affairs and Administration, from the University of Cape Town in 2008.

In 2011, Moya completed a Master of Philosophy from the University of Cape Town, specializing in Public Policy and Administration.

In 2021, she obtained a PhD in Political Science from the University of the Western Cape. The title of her PhD thesis is The negotiated nation, evaluating nation building in post-Apartheid South Africa.

Career

Her journey into politics started while she was a first-year student at the University of Cape Town.

Moya was a tutor and teaching assistant at the University of Cape Town Department of Political Studies. She became a research assistant and project administrator dealing with the Democracy in Africa Research Unit (DARU) and the African Legislatures Project.

In February 2010, she became a research assistant at the Community Law Centre, University of the Western Cape. She was the Monitoring and Evaluation Consultant, Programme Evaluation at Heinrich Boll Stiftung.

Moya worked as an office and project assistant at Bertha Philanthropies Services (Pty) Ltd. She became a member of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in 2011 and served in many roles until 2020.

In October 2011, the DA Head Office appointed Moya as the National Manager of Performance Development and Management System. She served as the Provincial Manager, Support Services in Gauteng from 2014 to 2016.

In 2016, Moya joined the City of Tshwane and served as the Group Head of Office of the Chief Whip until 2019. She served as the Chief of Staff in the Office of the Executive Mayor from 2019 to 2020.

Moya moved to ActionSA and became the Chief Governance Director on 1 April 2021. She was sworn in as PR Councillor in the City of Tshwane on 19 January 2023 and was later elected as Deputy Mayor in January 2024.

On 9 October 2024, Moya became the Executive Mayor of Tshwane. Her new position came with the removal of the former Mayor Brink Cilliers. She promised to be a mayor for all residents in the capital city.

Nasiphi Moya will be leading a multiparty coalition government. Parties involved will include the African National Congress, Economic Freedom Fighters, and other smaller parties.

She also advocates for women’s rights and promotes gender equality in her initiatives.
