Walter Mokoena (born 1978) is a South African sports broadcaster and businessman. He is best known as Pearl Thusi’s ex-husband.

Mokoena has worked for Kaya FM, SABC, and City Press newspaper. He founded the online news and media company The Joburg Post. He was a special advisor to the former minister of sports, arts, and culture, Nathi Mthethwa.

Early life

Walter Mokoena was born in 1978 in Carolina, Mpumalanga, South Africa, to Aaron German Mokoena and Betty Velephi Nene. He has three siblings, including two younger brothers and a sister.

Education

Mokoena completed his studies at Mphanama Comprehensive High School in 1996. He actively played student politics in school and was the president of the SRC at 16.

The sports presenter attended the Catholic University of Paris. He studied Transitional Justice at the University of Johannesburg. He holds an honors degree in Policy & African Studies from the School of Leadership at UJ.

Mokoena holds a Master’s Degree specializing in Water Governance and Diplomacy from the University of Johannesburg.

Career

Mokoena joined the broadcast industry in 1998 after joining P4 Radio Cape Town (now Heart FM). He also worked as a freelance Cape Town soccer correspondent at City Press newspaper.

His hard work and exceptional talent were noticed, thereby earning him more roles. He joined Kaya FM in August 1998 as a sports anchor in a breakfast show. He also bagged other roles, including a Soccer Talk Show host.

In 2000, Mokoena became an anchor for Mabaleng, a prime-time sports show on Saturday afternoons. He embraced more roles at SABC1, including hosting Blow by Blow.

Mokoena has appeared in other programs, including Laduma, the Live Football Show, and the Monday night Coca Coca Soccer Zone.

In 2010, he presented the FIFA World Cup live from Zurich and covered the Athens Olympics.

Mokoena created the SoccerLife 442, which was later acquired by Avusa Media. He launched and published his second weekly Football Arena.

Mokoena served as a consultant and South African representative of The Suez Environment.

After his return to South Africa in 2015, he returned to SABC as a football anchor. In 2016, he presented the European championship live from France.

Mokoena was also the special advisor to the former Minister of Sports, arts, and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa from 2019 to 2021. He owns the online news and media company The Joburg Post and is the CEO and founder of the MySportsBook app.

In April 2024, Sunday World reported he was struggling to pay staff members’ salaries.

Mokoena is currently the founder and executive chairman of South Africa International Water Week and founder South Africa International Water Week Foundation.

Personal Life

Walter Mokoena married Nosizwe Vuso, daughter of former president Jacob Zuma. They had a lavish private wedding ceremony in 2016.

After six years of marriage, the duo quietly separated in May 2021. They have children together, and are good partners to raise their children.

Their marriage began showing cracks after he began to complain about his wife’s depression and constant display of mood swings.

They desperately tried to rekindle their love and save their marriage through many family meetings. All their efforts proved fruitless.

Mokoena was previously married to model Pearl Thusi and they have a daughter, Thandolwethu Mokoena. He has been part of his child’s life regardless of their separation. He resides in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
